SafeGrip®
Bangkirai Decking
is an ideal product for
public projects, bridges, walkways, playgrounds, outdoor staircases
etc., in fact all areas where it is necessary to secure a
SafeGrip. The hardwood iDECK boards when treated with the
SafeGrip concept, will offer you additional surface grip.
Tested under severe conditions, SafeGrip has proven its durability
over time and in different weather conditions.
What is SafeGrip®?
SafeGrip is a combination of 2 polyurethane components mixed with
a layer of quartz sand. Because the quartz sand is added whilst
the basic product is going through the hardening phase it is
absorbed evenly by the polyurethane, thus giving a grip property
of 100% throughout the material rather than a thin surface layer.
More SafeGrip lines can be added to iDECK
as required, but 2 lines on a 145mm wide board has been chosen as
standard. SafeGrip can be delivered in a wide variety of colours
but grey is preferred for 2 reasons: it is almost invisible when
dry, yet really stands out when the timber gets wet and darker in
colour

Timber decks continue to be an
increasingly popular choice for a variety of both commercial and domestic
applications. However, many conventional deck boards can become slippery in wet
conditions and hence present the danger of slips, falls and personal injury.
John Brash has long recognised this problem and the need to provide enhanced
grip for certain applications.
JB Antislip Plus® has been specifically designed to provide a durable and
effective external antislip surface to minimise any risk of slipping - even in
adverse weather conditions. JB Antislip Plus® uses a unique formula of resin
based aggregate inserts which are injected into the deck board grooves. If
smooth boards are required, grooves are specially machined into the boards to
receive the inserts.
JB Antislip Plus® is recommended for the use on decks where there is public
access or where there is an anticipated high level of pedestrian traffic. JB
Antislip Plus® is also recommended for all stairs and ramps. JB
Antislip Plus® is available in treated Softwood (Decksure®).
Antislip rating
John Brash has developed the JB
Antislip Plus® insert in-house and have their own production facility. Complete
control is taken at all stages of the production process. The production
runs within their ISO 9001 quality assurance scheme.
JB Antislip Plus® has been independently tested by the Health and Safety
Laboratory (HSL) using a Stanley Pendulum Test (the operation and calibration of
which are described in BS7976:2002 parts 1 and 3) operated to the current issue#
of the United Kingdom Slip Resistance Group (UKSRG) guidelines (Issue 3, 2005).
The samples were tested with Slider 96 Rubber, also known as Four-S Rubber
(Standard Simulated Shoe Sole), which was developed to represent a footwear
material of moderate performance. Using Slider 96 Rubber, the Pendulum Test
Values (PTVs) achieved significantly exceed the minimum required classification
for ‘low potential for slip’. Under the UKSRG guidelines, a surface is required
to have a PTV of 36 or above to be considered to have a ‘low potential for
slip’.
The results of the HSL test are as follows:
JB Antislip Plus® with 2 inserts: Average* PTV = 63 when wet (27 above required
standard)
JB Antislip Plus® with 3 inserts: Average* PTV = 69 when wet (33 above required
standard)
JB Antislip Plus® with 2 inserts: Average* PTV = 78 when dry (42 above required
standard)
JB Antislip Plus® with 3 inserts: Average* PTV = 81 when dry (45 above required
standard)
# Correct at date of printing.
*Testing carried out using castellated (grooved) boards to a variety of
different orientations.
Date of testing: August 2007.
For most uses 2 antislip inserts are appropriate, however there are instances
where 3 inserts should be used, for example on a public walkway which crosses
water.
